With a global pandemic shifting our focus onto health and wellness, in 2021 the beauty industry saw a rise of interest in ‘skinification’ or ‘skinimalism’, which is simply put, taking better care of your skin with fewer products rather than relying on primers, concealers and highlighters for that healthy glow.

 

People want pure and hardworking active ingredients to rejuvenate and aid towards happy and healthy skin. In other words, a ‘skinimalist’ routine consists of just the essential products and even more ideally, only the essential ingredients. So how will these new found trends affect how we take care of our skin in 2022?

With all of this in mind, its interesting to hear Dr. Björn's take on the affect the pandemic has had on our skin as wearing face masks is the new normal of our lives...

Dr. Björn explains that “the skin barrier will continue to be a focus in skincare in 2022 as continued use of face masks is the new reality for our skin. What’s more, studies continue to show that irritating environmental factors such as UV rays, pollution, stress and diet to name a few, are sources of non-detectable inflammation in skin. This is a serious cause of premature skin ageing, or ‘inflamm-ageing’, as it breaks down collagen and elastin over time, impacting the normal housekeeping of our skin. Because of this, it’s likely we’ll see new and exciting, mitigating ingredients that help heal a compromised skin barrier, retain moisture, and minimise irritation and inflammation.”

What we want is to give the customer effective results, and a long list of ingredients doesn’t always do that, sometimes it will do quite the opposite. “According to a consumer report conducted by NPD Group in September 2020, 22% of women have changed their skincare routine because of the pandemic with a majority intending to stick with their new routine when things normalise. Moving forward, we are seeing a shift towards simplicity, a simplification of skincare both in terms of products, routines, and ingredients, with people replacing their expansive skincare collection with fewer targeted products that are backed by science and studies.”

 

Dr. Björn Örvar goes on to say that “in the past decade, we have seen a stronger ingredient awareness among customers and a rise in the so-called ‘clean beauty movement´. For example, recent studies show that around a third of US women between the age of 18-34 avoid products with parabens and silicones. All of this overwhelms, overstimulates and confuses the skin. With the skin being our body's largest organ, we really should treat it well and give it the amount of thought it deserves when it comes to what we put on it.
